January 20, 2025 – Tirana International Airport (TIA) has been certified with Level 3–Optimization under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, the only institutionally approved program led by the Airports Council International (ACI).
Climate change has become a global challenge for all industries, and the goal of minimizing environmental impact has turned into a major mission. The aviation industry has taken significant steps to promote policies fostering an environmentally friendly system, monitored by aviation sector institutions. TIA has consistently been part of these initiatives to reduce emissions, and this certification from the Airport Carbon Accreditation program serves as a significant motivation to continue making even greater strides.
This certification follows a lengthy monitoring process conducted by independent third parties with the expertise to evaluate the planning and implementation of the necessary activities to reduce the airport's environmental footprint.
Over €5 million has been invested in sustainable development projects and environmental impact reduction initiatives by Kastrati Group at Tirana International Airport, including:
With the achievement of Level 3–Optimization, TIA goes one step further. This level reflects not only the airport's individual efforts to reduce environmental impact but also the engagement of all stakeholders to achieve the same goal.
Eriola Tola, Head of Infrastructure and Environment at Tirana International Airport, stated:
"This certification marks another milestone in our journey toward achieving NET 0 emissions and adds value to the work done through our sustainable development strategy. The airport's leadership team is fully aware of the impact our operations have on the local, regional, and global environment. We have built a clear plan to identify all airport stakeholders and classify them according to their level of environmental and carbon emission impact. These include partner airlines, local authorities, commercial partners operating at the airport, employees, and more. Our goal is to engage them in joint initiatives to reduce negative impacts. Our program encourages a shared vision and commitment to environmental policies."
Kastrati Group has congratulated the airport team for this achievement. The Group’s practices focus on the environment and standardized European policies. Kastrati Group has ambitious projects for renewable energy production, which will impact not only the airport but also all group companies and, potentially, Albania as a whole. All the group’s investments are guided by the principles of innovation and sustainability.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of the Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, stated:
"Congratulations to Tirana International Airport on achieving Level 3–Optimization in Airport Carbon Accreditation! Level 3 marks an important milestone in progress and maturity on the path to carbon emission reduction. Congratulations to the entire team, and I look forward to celebrating further achievements on the journey toward NET 0 emissions."
Environmental investments are ongoing, and TIA is expected to complete the installation and operation of a solar farm soon. It will be one of the largest in Europe, capable of generating 50 MWp of energy. This investment will position Tirana International Airport among the few European airports to achieve NET 0 carbon emissions by 2030.
